really dirty fuel
« on: July 25, 2007, 10:46:26 pm »
Just bought the sixteen year old daughter her first car - 2000 Jetta TDI, she absolutely loves it and the fuel mileage. But first big problem, friend filled fuel tank with extremely dirty heating fuel! I know, don't ask

Being the dad spent last two nights pumping out the water, changed filter, filled filter with new fuel. Clear supply line going to injector pump is empty, tried spinning over motor for prime but it wont pull fuel, almost looks like pump is pushing fuel back instead of pulling. Tried filling line prior to reconnnecting, still will not suck.
Anybody got suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated, currently she's driving MY 4x4, DEFINITELY can't afford the fuel :(

women can be pretty dumb at times...  you'll need a vacuum pump on the injection pump return line.  pull a vacuum to pull the fuel to the pump.  you may need the ignition at the 'on' position to open the solenoid to allow the fuel to flow.

Check to see if the in-tank screen is clogged.
Not real sure about anything that new but it should be on the fuel sender/pickup.

A lot of people plumb in a diesel safe primer bulb like what they use in boats to help get the fuel to the pump.  People that I know who have done it say it works awesome.

bad fuel

Back in the days when I first got the diesel, I had trouble with a Racor filter that the previous owner had added. Changed the filter, wouldn't work. So I blew into the fuel tank after opening the "in" banjo, until fuel came out. Went to the front of the car tightened the banjo, and it fired up after a couple cranks. It looks and sounds odd, but it works for me. If you try it, use care not to swallow/aspirate fuel- it'll probably ruin your day.

I second the use of the boat motor hand bulb pump ! i use them on my diesels and it will help me in alot of situations ! it will tell me if my filter is pluged,! or if i run out of fuel i can prime the pump up again, or it can help locate fuel leakes or air in the lines!or in your case you could drain your tank of bad fuel! recently i had to use mine to drain my tank because my exaust pipe wore a hole in my fuel tank and i used the primer bulb to pump the diesel to another container. so it has been well worth the 10 bucks that i hade paid for it!

What was the problem with the Racor filter?  Was this one with the clear water seperator bowl underneath?  I am planning on installing  one or poss. two of these on my ride.  A 10 micron into a 2 micron.  Will probable go with the fuel heater probe as well.  Gotta keep that Giles pump investment nice and clean. :) As a bonus, the filter heads that I am looking at have built in prime pumps.
