Engine type?? Audi
« on: July 19, 2007, 12:31:22 pm »
I recently acquired a 1985 Jetta GL diesel.  The car came with a Audi engine, which I'm told is a replacement.  I'm trying to determine the type of engine so that I can buy parts for it.  On the block is the part #: 068 100 004 MX.  Not even Audi seems to be able to identify the engine.  Anyone here who can help? --  thanks, Ludo

Hi there,

Any photos? If its a standard 4-cyl then the engine number should be stamped on to a flat area at the top of the block between cylinders 2 & 3. It will probably need cleaning up to see it. The letters at the beginning are the engine code.

If you can find the engine code we can tell you what it is  :)

The engine code is also printed on the white bar code label on the timing belt cover, if its still there!

The part number is a short motor part number which has now supeseded to 068100104MX.
The engine is a Golf/ Jetta 1986-1992 1.6TD, 70bhp, JR engine

ETKA is VW/Audi's electronic parts catalogue which dealers use. (I work in a large VW parts department!)

You can find some "dodgy" copies of earlier versions on the internet (we currently use ETKA7 but ETKA6 is good if you can get it). you wont always be able to search details from the chassis number because it wont be connected to VW but it will allow you to cross reference and find applications for any VW part number. I could go on forever about what it will do but just try and get a copy! (will only work on windows PC NOT macs  )

You could also try to get hold of a copy of ETOS which is a simpler version of Etka but also includes the Skoda and Seat cars.

Alternatively try www.vagcat.com for some more basic info.
