Ok. I was so excited the first time I took out my rabbit. I was going along, 5th gear, 55-60. Coming up to a hill (a really slight little hill), and I put it into 4th gear, long before the hill. I instantly looked back, expecting glorious clouds of black smoke. Nothing. I might have as well just been driving a friggin' gasser, for soot ability. I know that my IP timing is a little off, as I did a tb change, and never set my timing again. And I can start it, when cold, with the cold start pushed in (starts rough, but does start). If I set my ip timing to the correct timing, will I gain the magnificent sooting ability?

Also, a friend was driving behind me once. I asked if I made black smoke. He told me I just made a little bit of blue smoke, apparantly, the entire time (not just when I shift). I drive with the pedal to the floor up to 5th gear anyway, so it might be something with that. If I'd drive for economy, maybe I wouldn't do that.

You consider soot a good thing? I guess it looks cool but for me the novelty wore off real quick driving my old Sportruck that smoked like a fiend.

There is a fuel delivery screw on the injection pump that will make your ride more smokey, but remember that soot is unburnt fuel, every time I see that black cloud, I think of it as a green cloud (wasted money).

Your top end could probably use a rebuild if it's always puffing blue smoke. It sounds like you have your timing right though, or at least pretty close

Yep, black soot = room for more boost. Of course it could also mean youv hit the wall as far as how much you can burn with your current setup. Nice discription Tyler, I have a visual off that. Time till detonation T minus 30 seconds and counting...29...28...

He has a NA, there is lots of room for more boost

Like Darth Garry said, there is a fuel screw on the pump you can turn up and you'll get some serious smoke, or moderate depending on how far you turn it

i can blow lotsa soot
but thats because those stupid hondas causing a filter restriction

you gotta adjust your pump starwheel+stuff like that
actually mine only blows soot before the turbo spools up.once it comes on,,it clears right up
cruisin easy though if i flatfoot it for a second itll throw a puff

If you turn that fuel screw in (clockwise, if memory serves me correctly) about half a turn to a full turn you'll make some soot.

Watch out though, too much fuel is a waste. Ref blue smoke, bad rings or valve guide seals most commonly.
