i believe that the passenger side mount and mount boss (part of subframe) are different than 4 cyls. The good news is that you can bolt in a 4 cyl passat subframe which will accept a diesel engine readily. It's likely that the other two mounts are different, but diesel mounts will bolt into those locations no prob. (the driver rear mount boss on the subframe is same 4-6 cyl, i think)
I believe VR6 cars have longer control arms, and therefore, longer driveshafts and tie rods. It shouldn't be a problem, as I think that the 4 cylinder 02A transmission you'll be needing to buy will have the same diameter driveshaft flanges. While on the topic of changing transmissions, you'll need to replace the VR6 flywheel with a gas passat or G60 flywheel, as there's a different bolt pattern where it attaches to the crank. You'll need to monkey with the fuel system a little, but if I were to do this conversion, I'd try using the gas car's tank, transfer pump (but probably not pressure pump) and lines up to the engine bay. I can't see the in-tank transfer pump having problems moving diesel, and it would certainly help with any future problems related to fuel draining back, and/or sucking air in somewhere.
Not a difficult swap if you have all the pieces in front of you, selling all the VR6 stuff would likely more than cover the cost of good used 4 cyl components.
I suppose locating an instrument cluster from a diesel passat would be helpful too, not to mention glowplug relay/wiring harness.
Incidentally, a passat syncro (and probably corrado G60) intercooler will bolt right into this chassis and the related piping gets pretty close to the diesel's intake manifold!
