WEIRD!!!!! oil pressure
« on: January 27, 2005, 06:05:40 pm »
Ok I am on my way home on the highway going with traffic doing about 110 k/mh oil pressure is fine and everything is great. I get close to home and stop in at a store I shut the car off go in for 5 minutes come back out start the car and look at the gauge 0 psi for roughly 8 seconds so i shut it off and try again, it goes up to 4 psi and I revved it to a high idle and the oil pressure went down. I shut it off again wait for 20 seconds, start it and it goes to normal? What the crap is that all about? the engine was not noisy or anything. Keep in mind I dont have oil leaks and I just did an oil change myself a few days ago.WHAT THE CRAP!! its scaring me. thanks for any help
( 86 jetta 1.6 td using 15w40 oil)

well... pray that the oil in your oil gauge lines clogged up???  with 0 psi each time you start it up, that will put some serious wear on your engine.
Would anyone else recommend that wynn's oil flush system to clean out the lines? or is this normal for 15w40 oil in winter?  Maybe mix down your 15w40 with some 10w30 to balance out for the cold?

i run rotella 15w 40 and if anything i have to much oil pressure, since it is a little on the thick side the guage reads a little slower but at idle after its all warmed up i still have 20 psi and when going 65-70 its got about 90 psi
what gauges do you have? i would suspect that it be the clogged line idea because if there is something mechanically wrong it wont fix itself.

15/40?  that oil is way too heavy for the temps we've been getting.  I'm surprised you can start it at all.  Do yourself a favour and put some 5/40 in it.  Your car will thank you.

Doesn't your car have an electric oil pressure sender? I have an older car that started to read low oil pressure, then read oddly like you mention. A new sender fixed it immediately. That was about 8 years ago and the engine still runs fine.

yes i have the electric oil pressure sender but i put a T in the head so that i could hook up a mechanical guage just so that if the idiot lights went bad i would see the drop or spike in engine conditions, i just dont trust those electronics since i am going to school to be a mechanical engineer

The signature from the original message said Hamilton Ontario.  I'm in Toronto.  I guess Michigan would have been getting similar temperatures.
