Author Topic: Help!!!How do i remove the camshaft pulley from the shaft??? (Read 6453 times)

Trying to replace my camshaft and timing belt , among other things, and can't get the camshaft pulley off of the camshaft. Instructions say to gently remove it(lol) No clue. Tapped on it with a rubber mallet various directions with no luck. Help!!!!

use two pieces of wood on either side to apply force (they need to be snug) then gently tap it out.

well i bought a pulley remover, and got the camshaft pulley off. now I'm struggling with the crankshaft pulley. the pulley remover won't work until i get the 4 allen bolts out. i put oil on them and am going to try again later. any other suggestions? will i have to heat them up to get them off?

You have no chance of getting those 4 bolts out with an allen wrench, you need the ones that go onto a socket. Put the car in first and make sure both wheels are on the ground and it should come off. That lower pulley is the reason I hate doing timing belts.
I prefer to use my impact but I've gone without many times

i bought the socket allen but it is bending. i put penetrating lubricant on it and i'm going to try it again. will let you know. i don't have much hope but we'll see. i'll let you know how it goes. is there any other way to change the timing belt?

If you smash the lower timing cover you can remove it without touching any of the accesorie pulleys. The only problem is if any crap from the road gets kicked up in there you risk snapping the t-belt or having it slip.

It happened to someone on this forum with a large piece of plastic

Use a long extension and then hammer your ratchet to get the "impact". I do it all the time but my tools have a lifetime warranty, no questions asked

any suggestions for air tools? i give up i'm just bending my new socket allen wrench.i'm ready to buy something. any idea what the smallest air compressor i can run tools that will let me take apart stuff on my car is?

i went to walmart and all they had was a 10gal that delivered 4 cfm @ 90psi. wasn't sure if that was enough to drive decent impact wrenches. they also had an impact wrench that has 230 ft pounds of torque for $25 and a nice one that had 500 ft pounds of torque for $99. after i get through changing my timing belt i will be replacing shocks and struts so i need something up to the task. any suggestions?

i'd say go with the 500 lbs impact (they can be set lower anyways, and so you don't really need the weaker one). remember not to go too tight on the smaller stuff. you should also get a torque wrench if you're re-doing the struts. a really good way to stiffen up the ride for sure

Get the biggest compresser you can afford. You'll hate a small one. I bought a used 10 gallon one and it's great for the air blower but beyond that it is kind of useless. An impact might remove 1 stubborn bolt in 3 cycles of the compressor. After the first day I wanted a bigger tank.
I prefer my electric impact from canadian tire. There are few occasions when it doesn't have enough torque but that's usually when I bust out the ratchet and hammer

Be thankful at this point you haven't stripped them out. I always put in new ones every time I do a belt.

Doesn't Metalnerd sell some hardened bolts less prone to stripping?

I agree with burn you money- get the biggest compressor you can aford and I would say the same for the gun. A cheap gun ($35-50) can take your wheels off but if the bold is stubborn, you will need a more expensive gun. a good automotive quality gun is $250. worst comes to worst, buy it, use it, return it.
As far as the compressor goes, if you are just going to use the impact and blow up tires, a small compressor will do. But don't expect to use a spray gun, or sand blaster or grinder with one smaller than a 25 gal 5 hp.
the electic impact is also a good idea and is probably the cheapest way to go. remember you get what you pay for.

Hang on guys! You don't need a monster impact gun to get the 4 allen bolts out! :shock:

All you need is a 12-point 8mm driveshaft key. Hammer that right in to the allen bolts and it will take them out no problem. Buy new bolts from the stealership and you're sorted

My dealer keeps them in stock!
