I welded my downpipe to a cast iron flange; been great for two years.

There are techniques specific to welding to cast iron, including preheating the pieces in an oven.

However, some just "go for it" and make out fine... I personally think  on smaller pieces the weld does the preheating for you, if you move slow.

Exactly.  I got a spare flange as well.

Cheap, good quality flanges.


I got a flange for my custom downpipe.  $8 for the Garrett flange, $19 for next day air from canadia.  It really is a quality flange.

Do they make a turbo to downpipe flange for the VNT15 off A4 TDI's?

That guy can make anything you want if you send him a gasket.  I think the most expencive flange he sells is $22.

Everything is 3/8" MILD steel

 yes you can! preheat evenly! then you can stickweld with nickel rod or with 7018HR4 rod with the 7018 it will not be machinable it will be to hard of a surface because of the carbon in the cast but the nickel rod it will be machinable. but pre-heat is important at least over 300 degrees! if any one needs the nickel rod # let me know and i will dig it up!
