so my old can is rusting apart, and now the question is...what do I put on it.

I was thinking 2.5" all the way back, with 1 resonator?

How legal is that, what IS legal?
Whats do you all reccomend?

If you are in the US, laws are different in different states.  Assuming that you aren't driving an ECO with a cat, you can put whatever you want on it so long as it doesn't exceed local and state noise ordanances.  That said, given the number of ricers running around sounding like angry bees, I am sure you could get by with a straight pipe if you really want.  My advice is the bigger, the better.  I am seriously considereing putting a 4 inch pipe on mine.  Really have no need for that big, but I have access to some 4 inch stainless pipe.  If there is enough to do this car, I just might try it.

For Ontario you need your cat converter preasent for your  bi-yearly emission test the muffler is only a decible control.I`am running a 2 1/4" with the stock cat only and it is very quite.Your exhaust system will last 4 times longer with out the muffler cooling and trapping moisture.

it all depends on how old your vehicle is.  If its earlier than 1988 or so I believe that it does not come with a cat.  If that is the case then you can do whatever you want as long as it doesnt sound too loud (cops will pull you over).

The test for my vehicle (86 jetta TD) is the visible smoke test.  I'm not a big fan of of spending 36 bucks for a smoke test, lol, but it beats spending hundreds of dollars on exhaust work!!! :D

I need to replace my exhaust system on my 1.6TD, non-ECO.
What setup will reduce emission the most, cat I assume, but does the muffler also reduce emissions?
How the setup that will provide the best fuel economy?
Jetta on SVO (kind of)
engine from quantum only 30k mi as of now!
