PM Trev0rbr, the one in the first link appears to be one of the few ones ever made, and may have only been a prototype

I'm pretty sure it must be a prototype, it has 0 miles and has never been installed, there are no marks on the electrical connectors or any evidence of installation on the plastic tabs (screw marks).

I don't know why VW didn't put a tach in everything.  Who needs a stupid clock!

The whole point of creating a prototype is to test the product in the real world in order to see how it stands up :testing means use and wear. As well, one of the other pics at this guys` site illustates a part number and why would you issue a part number to something that`s a one-off or two-off? What we probably have here is an example of a rare OEM istem that was sitting in someones` part stock unsold. And, given that it was @$200 in 1981(in addition to the cost of insallation), I imagine that there`s not many of them around, which would account for the rarity,...

the pics are from my site, and there is no factory vw style part # on this cluster, only production dates..

I can reference all #'s against the etka and see what there is there.

You might want the check with anyone in South Africa VW as the tach is still an option in that market and fairly common in the bone yards there,..
