:? can you preform a ring change from the oil pan? i have a '86 golf 1.6l NA that i am thinking about selling and it has some big blow by issues.
also if i was under it would i be able to see the oil squirters if it had them.

Don't think so... There'd be no room to get the piston out with the crank still in place. If you wanted, you could leave the block in the car, remove the head, remove the con rod caps from the bottom and then put the pistons up and out (assuming there isn't too much of a ridge at the top of the cyl)...

You might have been thinking of replacing rod bearings or some of the main bearings with the oil pan off... I've done that before and it's possible.

Yes, you'd be able to see those, but I don't think the NA engines had those... I'm sure others will chime in about that though.

i would take the crank out. the reason i think it may have squirters is that the engine was out of another car.(when i bought it it was already in)and it has the ip for a turbo car.(lda on top)

If you can read the engine code that would tell you if it's a turbo block or not. Certain codes (CY is one) are turbo. Are you pulling the transmission and everything else out too? You'll have to drop the tranny to take the crank out.

good point on pulling the tranny, now it doesnt sound so much easier to do it from the bottom. where are the numbers located?

if ur going to do rings with the motor in the car just pull the head, its sooo much easier, and be sure to check the valve train while the heads off

Ring compressor is flat. Engine from underside is not.

Might be able to get those rings in the cylinders somehow but how much easier would it be to pull the head.

(my opinion is it probably cant be done)

The pistons won't come out from the bottom even with the crank removed. I tried when I had to gut a longblock to get the head off (lighter to move around when empty).

Any excuse to renew the headgasket will do....

Pull the head !!!!!
