ok so my automatic rabbit ran away a while ago and then i put new rings in the engine and i was having problems with oil coming out of the ccv. then i cam splash guard in and stopped driving it on the highway for a while, problem solved haha. so today i was messing with it and wanted to see what kind of fuel mileage it would get on the highway and see how much oil would come out of the ccv, so i filled a bottle with tissues and cut a whole bunch of slots in it so it cold breath easy and put the ccv in the bottle. so i filled my tank then ran 10 miles down the highway to my school which i just graduated from (woot) then i got out and checked the bottle, and there was barely anything in it, it looked like some threw a pinch of brake dust on the bottom of the napkins. nice. so i drove it back to the gas station and found i did 40 mpg (25.9 miles with .647 gallons) not bad for a 3 speed automatic that is geared so extremely low. then i drove it home and popped the hood. the distance to the school and fromt he school were the same since i took the same roads, but it looked like an oil bomb went off under my hood. and godo bit of oil was missing on the dipstick when i got home (and it was def full when i left.)

so basically, i know the automatic gassers like to use oil because of how low they are geared, but what all can i do about it, and do you all think the cause is, i mean it has new rings, and idnd't do it for the first 10 miles, then all of a sudden it blew it all over the engine bay, and thats with the splash guard. so long as i stay off the highway this never happens. one thing i am thinking of trying, is how this car has the block off plate for the ccv thats on the front of the block above the oil filter, i'd like to put a hose on that and run it up to the hose on top of the valve cover and see what that does. this *** is just so gay and confusing.

maybe it's the fact that the gearing is bs. 1st gear is sooo long, 2nd gear is USELESS, and 3rd gear is just way too low.

ok. i used to have a golf with an automatic... that thing would turn my air filter oil filled in no time. (brought it up to about 7k rpm though :lol:)

i think it is because you need to stomp on it to get it to go. could also be that your bores are a little bit oval, giving the rings a bit of a bad seal.

My AAZ has the factory hose that goes to the valve cover breather. I just got back from a 500 mile trip, with a lot of 100+ degree weather,averaging 3000 rpm, but up to 4500 for short times, also with steep up and down hills, and I didn't use hardly any oil. I am putting a full report in a new thread though. I just have a long coiled open hose on the breather until I decide what to do with it. No oil came out of it.

the bores aren't oval, i checked for all that, i think the problem is the revs, like ur saying, i just think its weird that for the first 10 miles nothing happened, then the second 10 miles half a quart of oil got thrown all over my engine bay. and i had just driven it home so the engine was already warmed up. its just not a highway car haha.

or perhaps the oil is getting so hot that it is thinning (and spraying?)

maybe try some 5w50 or 20w50... worth a shot maybe??? i know that switching to 15w40 on the golf really helped with the oil soaking/spraying, but made winter starts pretty hard

What was your ring gap, or did you use the Total Seal rings? I don't think you could have had hotter oil than I did on my trip. I am running 15W40 btw. I'd try a hose from the block off plate to the breather as it can't hurt.

your bores are probably shot, and im sure the valve guides are in about the same condition. throwing new rings on almost never solves a problem, its just a temporary "fix", kinda like knurling valve guides instead of putting new ones in.

well the motor is effectively working harder, possibly say by 20% based on his mileage. plus factor in that the N/A has no oil cooler, and you have 2 big oil coolers.

i still believe it is because the oil was thinning during the trip. can't really explain the 10 mile trip without issue anyway else.

i've never done a compression check, when i had the engine apart i the head is practically new, the motor was apart another time due to what looked like a timing belt problem, there were valve dents in the pistons, but that was all before i owned the car, the valves sealed really well, i did a leak down test on them and they all held gas in them with out leaking for 5 mins or something. i forgot to mention though, the automatics came with the oil cooler like a turbo diesel, but some dumbass that worked on this car previously bought the wrong hose to go from the water pump to the head, so they put a bolt in the hose to the cooler, so only one coolant hose goes into the cooler and the other is blocked off, and i wouldn't mind putting the proper hose on. the motors running 15w40. and perhaps it is getting too hot and the oil cooler is way vws way of dealing with that on the automatics.

heres a picture of the head after the car ran away, it sat for about 24 hours before i pulled the head.

we did measure the bores i believe they were all in spec, i'll have to ask my dad i wasn't paying much attention during that part haha, but i did do most of the work myself just for the record.

ok so it went to the junk yard and bought the plate for attaching a hose to the front the block. normally that hose goes from the front of the block to the vacuum pump on the older diaphragm style pumps, i think its an oil return, anyways i just ran a hose from there to the top breather hose on the valve cover, and have it all still going to a soda bottle, i've ran it up and down the highway a little bit now and it hasn't had any issues with oil coming out, so i'm going to start using the highway for going to work, so long as that goes well then i have fixed the problem and i can put the hose back on to the intake then my engine bay won't have a soda bottle in it anymore haha. so hopefully this is the conclusion for anyone with a similar problem, for some reason my crank was breathing enough just though the valve cover, so adding the extra hose lets it breath. instead of building up pressure and spewing oil out in my engine bay.
