Engine swap

Hi, I just joined this forum because in the next year I want to swap a tdi engine into my 97 2.0L (gas) Jetta GT.
I was just wondering what motor would be best to swap in, I was thinking of just getting one from a mk3 because that be easiest? I'm wondering if it's going to be a challenge converting my car from a gas engine to a diesel? What all will have to do other than swap the engine and wiringharness+ECU? Also is it hard to wire?

Hi there,
If you get a 97 TDI donor it should be a very easy swap. The wiring from the TDI will just plug straight in where your 2.0 wiring was, and you can swap the instrument cluster too. The main electrical difference is the fly-by-wire so you need to swap the pedal cluster.
Flush the tank & swap the sender and fuel lines, and thats about it really for plumbing other than the engine itself.
I'm guessing you'll get an AHU from a mk3. There are quite a few of us doing swaps with those at the moment
Watch out for the immobiliser! Some 97s had it and some didn't I think and thats causing a few of us some 'issues' :?
Wouldn't it be easier to buy a mk3 Jetta TDI or do you have a lot of work invested in your 2.0?
Good luck anyway! Mikki x

hmm, seems like more work than I thought, one question...whats a immobiliser?
but yeah, I've lowered my jetta with coilovers, I've put 17's on for summer and I've installed a good sound system, also it came with full stainless fox exhaust system when I bought it.

Well yes its a fair amount of work, but no harder than any other engine swap
The immobiliser is an anti-theft thing with a transponder built in to the key and a little brain behind the dash. Apparently it wasn't introduced in NA until 2000 ish so you should be ok. We are plagued by the damn things in the UK
Good luck with the swap! Mikki x

thanks for the info, yeah I hope to do it next year in mechanics, I'll see though if they will let me, I want to do the diesel, but if not I will prob try a vr6. With the diesel I just thought it would be nice to have some power aswell as good on fuel at the same time.

You don't have to swap the pedal cluster to add the TDI throttle position sensor. You just need the pedal, potentiometer, potentiometer bracket, pedal pivot pin, and spring. I would strongly advise against a VR6 because they are generally peices of crap and really not that fast. But, why not just buy a car with one of these engines?
