I'm picking up a 1990 Jetta today and I'm not sure if the pump has the LDA or not. Could I see some pics to get a better idea? If it doesn't I'm pretty much screwed on upgrading the pump unless I get a different one right?

If this is a stock US-spec '90 jetta, then it is non-turbo, and would have the non-LDA pump.
HOWEVER it may have the altitude compensation thingy that some later NA engines had, which looks similar to the TD LDA but does the opposite - it cuts fuel in lean air, to reduce smoke (and your ability to accelerate)
This is a pic of a turbo diesel pump with the LDA, which in this pic is the shiny-ish round thing that sits on top of the pump:

I'm confused, there is definately a turbo on the car but there's no LDA. How is it not turbo if there is a turbo?

Eco diesels just don't have an LDA they obviously are still turboed.

ecodiesels technically are turbo diesels, they're just not as good as the "real" turbo diesels.... kind of like economical turbo diesel or regular turbo diesel.

The ECO pump also has a 8mm plunger, which is the suck. The NA and TD pumps have a 9mm plunger.

Eco diesels also have the K14, a nice small fast spooling turbo. Upgrade the pump (even to a NA pump) and you should have a quick car with minimal lag (relative)

Yes I did notice that the turbo begins to spool almost immediately. Are you serious that a NA pump will be an improvement? That would be awesome, cos I have one laying around. Of course, would a true turbo pump be an even better way to go even if I'll never be able to afford to send it to Giles? =)

Given that it has a turbo but no LDA, it's likely either a '91 ECO or it had an ECO motor swapped in at some point. The configuration you describe was only offered in '91 and '92.

Anybody use a K14 with a turbo injection pump and up the boost on the K14 to around 20 PSI? I think that would actually make for a pretty peppy ride.
