AHU in T3 Wont Start. :( .. Help Please

Putting a 1.9TDi AHU engine into my dad's T3.  Turing to get it running fully as it was in the golf it came from using the ECU and original pump.  Have the original key taped to the immobiliser ring thing...

Got it wired up and all connectors reconnected.  When you power it up you get the battery light and the  glow plug comes on, however the rest of the original dash is blank, no mileage readings or anything.  The glowplug light goes out again so assume its working properly

Tried spinning it for a while, it has fired a couple of times, but wont fully catch, took one of the pipes off the injector and there was no fuel, apart from when it randomly fired at that point it fired a little, then the fuel stopped again.  Thought about trying to take out the fuel cut of solenoid, however am not too sure what I am doing.  Does this seem likely to be the problem, or is it just likely to be airlocked or something?

Also any ideas why the instruments are blank and would this be indicating something is missing?

supposedly the TDI's can take quite a while to prime... i assume that on the AHU pump there is a stop solenoid? make sure there is power going to it.

Think that may be the problem.

Ran vagcom, need to register it to get a couple, so will do it again tomorrow with it registered these were the errors:

Found out what the other codes mean:
17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer
00522 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62)

Sounds like I have a bit of work to do with the wiring... Or need to find a way around the immobiliser...

I think the immobiliser needs the clocks working to dis-engage. The glow-plug light is connected directly so has no relation to the rest of it, but I think you need to get the clocks powered up properly to get it running.

Or get the immo disabled? I have to do this on mine as I didn't get the key and bits with it. Talking to an Upsolute dealer tomorrow to see if they can do it.

Does anyone know of any other tuners in the UK who can do Rocketchip and Upsolute type stuff?

I tried looking for a place to remove the immobiliser, found a guy on ebay that said he could but depends on the model of the ECU Here if it helps you: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130123529481
but then ended up getting another golf complete that I could get the bits from.

Have got the dials powered up now and goes to the "in 02" when firing up.  Reckon I'm about there (touch wood).  The starter is really slow in it so going to sort that out before going any further.  Only problem is i can't erase fault codes, Vagcom tells me to buy the professional interface  :mad: So don't know what problems are there from previous and what have gone away....  :rolleyes:

Does anyone know what this is?  It was hanging around in the engine bay and i can't find where it should go or a picture of it in the haynes manual..

I think a lot of the tuners in the UK can only work on OBDII cars where they can remap them online, but I will definitely ask that Ebay seller thanks!

The 'in02' is a service indicator and can be reset manually but I can't remember how. It's in the Golf owners manual if you can find one. I'll check the Haynes book...

I think the unregistered VAG-COM will erase all the codes won't it? But just not tell you the full story on any that come back. Mine certainly did that on an Audi I had.

The thing in the pic is the vehicle speed sensor. The clocks are digital on later cars, and that sensor is part of the engine loom. The diesel ECU uses it for cruise control as well, but if you're not using the clocks or cruise then you can leave it disconnected as far as I know.

Hi Mikki,

I thought the in02 was what they said when they fired up?  My past 2 golfs have done that when the engine was turning over... Although saying that I did the servicing myself and never reset any service light etc.

I cant delete the codes using Vagcom 409-1 as it says i need the professional interface.  I'm not sure if I have a proper vagcom cable or not as it came of ebay so its original origins are unknown.  If i can find a way to reset the fault codes i think it would help.  I'm hoping that the engine start blocked code was when i was messing about with the engine in the golf and tried starting it without the key using a screwdriver in the barrel out of curiosity.  Stupid thing to have done  :oops: but its been done so just need to find a way to sort it.

Hiya,

Definitely the service indicator  

IN00 - no service
OEL - 10k oil change service
IN01 - 12 monthly service
IN02 - 20k full service

Reset procedure is as follows:

After all necessary maintenance work has been carried out the relevant service interval display code must be reset. If more than one service schedule is carried out, note that the relevant display intervals must be reset individually.
The display is reset using the reset button on the left-hand side of the instrument panel (below the speedo) and the clock setting button on the right-hand side of the panel (below the tacho). On models with a digital clocl the lower (minute) button is used.
Turn the ignition switch on and check that the speedometer mileage indicator is set to the mileage setting and not the trip meter setting. When this is so, press and hold the left button. Keeping the button pressed switch off the ignition and release the button. The word 'OEL' should be displayed. By pressing the left button again the display will change to 'IN01', followed by 'IN02'. Set the display to the relevant service which has just been performed then press the clock button briefly until '----' is displayed. This indicates that the service interval display has been reset. Repeat the procedure for all the relevant service display intervals.
Once the resetting procedure is complete, switch on the ignition and check that 'IN00' is shown on the display.

Not that any of that will start your engine, but maybe it's useful  :?

A friend has just had a similar immobiliser problem on an Audi 1.8T conversion, and simply sticking the key to the immo ring allowed it to start. He didn't have to reset anything in the ecu with VAG-COM, which was handy since he doesn't have it.
I wouldn't have thought that it would permanently disable itself (or at least disable pending dealer intervention), since that's not a very helpful thing for a car to do! I would still suspect a wiring issue somewhere...

Well I'm talking to Upsolute about deleting the immobiliser and look what I just found on their forum:

1. put in the new ECU
2. turn on the ignition (don't start) immobiliser will activate
3. fire up VAG-COM
4. access controller 17 - Instruments Controller,
5. enter the Adaptation function,
6. do a Read on 00
7. followed by an immediate Write on 00
8. immobiliser will deactivate
9. turn off ignition, and restart the car

You will probably need the full version of VAG-COM for this, but it might be worth a try. The thread doesn't say which car this procedure is for so who knows....

I know the fault code isn't stopping it from starting, I want to delete the code so that i can give it a spin and see if it comes back, that way I will know if the immobiliser is deactivating or not.  Will also let me know what codes are remaining in the system and those that are still needing to be sorted.

I think that if i can get it to turn over at a good speed, it should make sure there is no air locks and give it a much better chance of actually starting.  Loosened the starter off and gave it a spin, the earth wire was red hot so i assume something isn't fully lined up yet.  Unfortunately it started pouring with rain tonight, so wont be able to get any more done till the weekend now.

Will this work if the key is missing? I have a 1Z with loom and ecu but no key - it is going into my 91 Syncro Bus

No idea I'm afraid. I never tried it myself - just something I found on the Upsolute forum. It didn't say which ECU it applied to, and I'm keeping my immobiliser so I don't want to try it!
