Spam problem
« on: June 17, 2007, 09:45:37 am »
Hi,

As everyone knows, there's a serious spam problem on the forum, i installed some 'trick' to avoid it , but after a few weeks, the bots can bypass the security..

After my vacation, im gonna try other mod to eliminated the spam..

If you have any idea, feel free to post it..

I also named Tyler ( burn_your_money ) as a new active mod, so he can keep the forum clean by the time we find something..

Thanks,
Marc/

Cool. Burn_Our_Spam!!! , your new name Burn_Your_Money. I think on my Rover forum, the admin set the defaul country on the sign up to some odd country like Antarctica, and if the bot didn't change it, which most didn't, it got rejected. I'll ask and see what else he uses, although I think he also manually went through applications that made it through the software. But he is trying to get away from that now.

i think its allready sayed in a other post, but when you register you must type a "word" wich you can see on a JPEG like you have to do on several other forums. anyway, i'm not realy good with computerstuff.

i'm also looking forwards to see what the guys do who dont post, but mainly read. i know there are several readers on this forum with a powerfull dieselmachine, maybe everybody need to do a post in general or so, and then you can read or so? just an idea.

While the anti-bot "tricks" like captcha keep getting better, so do the bots themselves. It's a never-ending battle against spam.

I've seen other forums that require the first post from a user to be OK'd before any other posts can be made. If the first post actually fits in the forums then the user is allowed in, if it isn't then they're deleted.

If we don't get too many new users, then perhaps the manual work wouldn't be too much. Perhaps several trusted individuals among us can be allowed to go through new posts?

on my forum i have it set to admin validation.  Usually if im unsure of a new member i send them an email asking what they drive and just some easy questions to answer, if i dont get a reply i usually delete them, you can also tell by the email a lot of the time, they most often aren't a hotmail or yahoo or gmail account its always some weird one like [email protected] or something haha

Let me know if there's a problem with this..

RedRotors, on the vwdieselparts.com forum I installed a phpBB mod that required a special VIP code during registration in order to successfully create the user account.

I posted the VIP code in one of the general areas on the forums so new users would look there for the code before registering. I've had one spam post since the feature was implemented, and no false user accounts.
