downpipe question n/a and turbo
« on: January 15, 2005, 08:01:04 pm »
i have a 91 eco diesel... and i'm looking to make a custom exhaust/ downpipe, bigger so it flows better/ better/ faster spool up.

what my question is.... is the stock down pipe on a turbo and a n/a 1.6 the same? like same length/ have the same angles etc.... ????

i have a guy that has a 1.6 downpipe off a n/a that i could have for nothing, what i want it for is the flange, and to use as a pattern to make my new custom downpipe.

also how big can i go? whats best?

most i would ever modify to is an intercooler and a boost controller, no more than 15psi.

2.5" or 3"

also anyone have any recomendations on a muffler that has a nice throaty/deep tone too it?

i like being able to hear the turbo with no muffler as of now, but its a lil too loud.

I made a 2.5" SS exhaust for my 94 Golf 1.9TD. It looks absolutely massive compared to the stock downpipe and I'm guessing it flows about 70% more, by my rough calculations based on a 1.9 downpipe. A 3" would flow 200+% more. And from what I've read a 1.6 downpipe is even smaller than the 1.9.  So 2.5" would be plenty for a 1.6. As for muffler recommendations I can't give one since I don't have one  :)  .

Muffler :

I run a basic dynomax. Eazy to get in any size. Inexpensive. Efficient (enough). Not that noisy with a TD engine.

Quality isn't there? Who cares? It has a life warranty!

(Here to : 2,25in downpie -> muffler, no pre-muffler. Spools as soon as 1300rpm.)
1.9 IDI,
minimalist exhaust system; soon big FMIC and 15 psi boost.

i have no muffler now, and its broken off where the muffler would attach so if i had it coming out of the back of the car it probably wouldnt be soo loud inside.

who did you guys get to bend the sections where it goes over the axle? or did you just by bent piece's and cut/ weld them together till it fit?

what does the middle muffler even do? isnt it just a glass pack essentially? i want some turbo whine

middle muffler keeps it quiet... other than that I don't know lol..  If its rusted out then do away with it before a rusty piece of metal jams up and gives you backpressure :( thats all I know about that middle muffler
