MK3 5 speed swap into MK2

Okay... big dissapointment here.
turns out that mk3 driveshafts flanges are not only larger, but the length of the driveshaft is longer too; approx 3/4 of an inch... uh oh...
and the actual flange sits out about half an inch as well...
has anyone ever changed the flanges to make this work??? i have another tranny sitting there with the 90mm flanges.
aside from that there is just the spedo cable issue, but i'm not concerned with that...

Are the u-joints the same size? If so, you could put a flange from the Mk3 shaft on the Mk 2 shaft, so it would match the tranny with the 3 end, and the diff with the 2 end.

oddly enough the shaft diameter on the driver's side is smaller :? :x
but i like your idea... maybe i'll just have the shaft cut & re-welded & balanced...
but if anyone has done it this way with success, please share!!
oh yea... don't forget that the flanges on the MK3 trans code CHE stick out about 1/2 an inch more too... so maybe just shortening the drive axles will do it.

There are also u-joints with one size one way, and another the other. I'd go to an auto parts store with someone who has been in the business a long time though, as they will know what you are asking about. If the slip joint has enough travel, I wouldn't worry about 1/2. Hey, arent you guys supposed to be metric up there?

yea metric... so um... 1.5 cm? lol i didn't mic it or anything... i wish i could talk to someone else who has done the conversion, and find out what they did.
longer axles would be bad if i hit a huge pot hole or something right??? wouldn't it put a lot of stress on the shaft & tranny

i have a mkII transmission in my mkIII car. it has the 100mm (mkIII) output flanges in the mkII transmission (which originally had 90mm's)which then allow the mkIII axles to be used.
similarily, in your case, (i think) 90mm (mkII) output flanges could be put into your mkIII transmission. and it should all bolt up. i think
alternately, you hybrid the 100mm inner CVs and the mkII axles...

yep
Hey, arent you guys supposed to be metric up there?
 we have to straddle both systems so we can still do business with you archaic americans!!

sure do!!! funny people on here say i just need the 100mm drive axles  lol... but i like a good challenge!
anyone in need of 100mm mk3 axles??? i was hoping to use them, as i just found out that my driver's side axle has a tear in the boot coming from the tranny side...
ill probably stop over at the stealership sometime and grab those caps... i've talked to a transmission guy and he said that it's real easy to take the flange off, but doing so while saving the cap is a bit tough... and in a pinch would put silicone to seal it up.
also, the tranny i'm stealing the flanges from is an N/A (yet to get the code) but if anyone wants to buy it real cheap, it works, but i don't know about grinds etc...
i've been itching to get this transmission in my car for a while now... the ratio's i have now are pretty disgusting

hrm.. i think that there are 100mm mkII axles out there. maybe for GTI or scirocco. they might fit without changing anything else...

Hi there,
Are you using the Mk3 02A cable trans? If so then the axles / driveshafts from a Corrado G60 should bolt right up.
Don't your 100mm inner CVs fit on your old driveshafts?

hmmmm... should i really go with 100mm though??? i'm only looking to get around 100 hp and 160 ft/lbs torque... 90mm's can handle that right???

I'm pretty sure they can handle it, but what's easier, swapping complete axles or flanges?

for ease finding direct swap axles would be best. alternately you could fit 100mm CVs to the old axles, i think they will fit as Mikki suggested. you might as well keep the 100s, no harm in it. if you have the 90mm flanges and no other parts, you could put them in that gearbox for time/money savings.
