I have a Caddy truck with a the 5 speed 020 in it, that I just swaped from a Rabbit car. The tranny was rebuilt and all new seals installed. The problem is that on a long highway run it will start to leak gear oil out were the speedo cable goes in. My freind has the same problem with his. I was wondering if this was a normal thing or if I over filled. I filled it with Lucas synthetic gear oil until it ran out of the fill hole. I asumed it was to be filled like a 4 speed. Am I wronge or did I miss a seal in the case for the speedo cable. Please help. I am going to be moving to AZ from OH so I need to fix this quick.
Just for clarification... you filled it up to the fill hole, or to the speedo hole ?
It's a perfect design. Open the fill hole, do not use the fill hole, Take your speedo gear out, now fill through speedo hole untill fluid comes OUT the FILL hole. Nice.
Or you could just dump in the premeasured amount
Let it sit for a while with the fill plug out, the oil takes a while to settle and level out.
What year is your tranny? Some actually need an extra 0.5l above the fill hole check
www.brokevw.com for the specifics. It's only the A1 trannys IIRC
I filled it untill it ran out of the fill hole. That is why I am puzzled at why it you leak from the speedo hole.
Tyler is on to something tho... you have to wait quite a long time for the excess to drain out the filler hole... I let mine sit a couple of hours just to be sure...

Here is a silly question. Is the gasket still on the speedo cable where it goes in and tightens up? Mine split in half years ago. Rubber o-ring did the trick. Just a thought.
