ok i have a 86 1.6 td jetta and i have done the limiter mod boosted the psi to 23 and have added a 626 intercooler. I was wondering if i am way over fueling it? When i have it lets say in second gear at 2000 rpm and i put it to the floor it smokes black like there is NO tomorrow until it hits about 3500 then it friggin gets up and moves. Either i would like to put a new tdi turbo because of the sooner spooling or find out how to pour less fuel in at under 3000. I also only half stock 1 7/8 exhaust. And another thing to add is that i dont really have great fuel economy.

fuel economy. Of course it's bad : all that smoke behind is fuel that will not bring you ahead.

Bigger and minimalist exhaust might help. I rememeber with my old 1.6td, the day I changed the exhaust for 2 inches, no pre-muffler and dynomax (cheap, effective muffler). I could hear the turbo spooling like crazy as soon as 1300rpm. Of course, it was not the case before. (And before, I hat stock down-pipe and NO pre-muffler either -- so that 2in down-pipe did a big change.)

Also : Maybe injection increases to quick, try to adjust the boost pin so that it will kick in with a little more boost.

what about a straight downpipe? Is that legal? I know diesels don't need any back pressure...

and by the way, I don't think there is many ways of getting past turbo lag (which you are experiencing) other than a few simple things like better intake, and exhaust. Maybe advance timing, etc. My car smokes just like yours (in the summer, I have to drive slower... but people still drive up close... when they don't back off I give them a nice black cloud lol)

Funny though.. I can't seem to get my car to smoke in the cold winter... (maybe because I don't have enough visible light.. who knows)

Colder, more dense air -> more oxygen / volume -> better combustion -> less smoke.
