Fuel Pump Timing vs. Smoke Screw

I'm trying to find out what everybody is using for settings on their engines reguarding fuel pump timing and smoke screw settings. For example, if you set the (fpt) at say, .90 and adjust the screw to where you have a easily noticeable amount of black out the back. Verses a higher setting in the fpt, like something in the 1+ reading with the screw readjusted for noticeable smoke. Does anybody notice any difference in mid or high engine responance? Gas mileage? Are you driving a Turbo or NA?
Thanks for your help. Hopefully gathering info like this and other topics will help us all tune the best we can.

Ive just reset mk AAZ mk1 golf to 0.95mm pump piston position,i was at 1.0mm but it was a little noisier than i wanted so i dropped it back,it was 0.85mm when standard. It still starts instantly at 0.95mm so im happy with it,Giles suggested 0.95 ages ago so i stuck with that, and my fuel screw is standard and its quick enough so im not going to mess.
