Ideal Timing Number???
« on: July 06, 2007, 08:56:25 am »
Okay, maybe there is no such thing.  I've seen advice and timing numbers tossed around on here a lot, and I'm wondering what everybody's opinion would be for my application (I'm doing the timing this weekend).

Car:  1981 VW pickup, CY Turbo diesel, stock turbo, uprated downpipe, stock pump.

Goals:  I am mainly concerned with keeping the engine as healthy as possible, and the fuel mileage as good as I can.  Also, keeping EGT's down is always a good thing.

Power and speed are great if they are in line with making it more efficient/reliable, but something tells me they are not.  I mostly drive on the highway.

I've heard different numbers (1.05 seems to stand out in my mind) mentioned often.  I have it currently set in the upper range of bentley spec, which I can't recall at the moment, although it's been a while since I checked timing.

Anyways, any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks!
