I have an 85 golf and everything ran great started everytime, I let the car sit for about a month and now it won't start. I'm thinking maybe I need to bleed the fuel line but I'm not sure any help would be great.

do you have a clear fuel line going into the injection pump? if so check it out and see if its solid fuel going in, fuel with bubbles, no fuel at all.

can't hurt to drain the water seperator on the fuel filter.

top up with some fresh diesel

and try it with a boost.

you can loosen the injection unions one at a time while cranking it over and see if fuel begins to seep from the connection. when you see seeping fuel, you have more or less 'bled' that line. this isn't completely necessary but it makes purging out any air much faster and you get some sort of visual indication that each injector is seeing fuel. (use brake clean if necessary to clean up the unions so they are dry when you try it)

thanks for the reply I do not have a clear line to the pump so I guess I'll try cracking the lines. Is this a common problem?

When you are cranking is there any smoke coming out of the tail pipe?

Check to see if the stop solenoid on the pump is getting 12v while cranking and also while the key is in the run position

ya listen to bym.

i'd say its a common problem for the pump to lose prime when its been sitting. all depends on there being a leak somewhere in the system. so it will depend on the condition of the pump seals, and how well all the lines are sealed. keeping the fuel return lines new (the soft vacuum line) would be a cheap way to potentially improve the situation if this is a problem for you.

well i got it started with some priming but I think my pump seals are shot. it's leaking from somewhere in between the pump and where the fuel injector fits into the head I can't see where but there is a steady drip while it's running. Is this something I can patch up with an ebay seal kit, I'm going to replace the motor soon with a turbo motor so I just need a quick fix for now.

How soon are you swapping engines? If it's within a month I'd just drive it like that. As long as it is started every couple of days it should be alright. Some people say running ATF will fix the seals, some say ATF will corrode your lines/pump/injectors
You can reseal the pump, I think there is a how to in the FAQs

Again thanks for the help, I didn't want to pull the motor utill after summer as I'm going to rebuild the turbo motor before installing it.

What do you mean by running atf I know it's auto trans fluid but do I run straight atf for mix it?

I usually prefill the fuel fitler with it when I change filters. I used to put about 5 shots in with each fill up but I don't do that anymore, I run some special diesel additive
