What do I keep for spares?
« on: January 09, 2005, 05:03:28 pm »
Wife started driving new (to us) 1992 Jetta with 1.6TD. Five speed car, fairly fresh motor from 84 Jetta in back yard.

Found a decent 1991 Jetta with 1.9 TD already installed. Going to buy (I hope!)when they guy gets back from a holiday down south.

In stock: Remains of 1984 JettaTD 4 door parts car (low miles), and 1984 Jetta 2 door current daily driver(Body getting tough, high miles) along with 1987 Fox four door four speed gasser. I can get some miles out of my snow tires I think, but what about everything else?

Are the trannys I have in stock from the Jetta's worth hanging onto for the A2 cars? They have a different switch for the reverse lights etc, but is the rest the same? They're both five speeds that work ok, but the one I took out of the gasser (7A) needs seals. The one in the gasser now (AGS) needs nothing and has a fairly fresh 190mm clutch in front of it. I do know the  output shafts are the same because I had to pull apart a halfshaft to get a CV joint christmas eve. Assuming the 91 comes into my possession, I have some junk to move. Do I keep some for myself, or sell it all cheap on this board? (No bites on the Fox yet, but the A1 stuff should move a little easier!) By the way, anyone tell me how the gears in the 7A compare to the AGS? Seat of the pants tells me I might have a little more zip with the AGS. Might just be the new clutch too though.

Hi Patrick can`t help you on what to keep I always save 100% and use 5%.Here`s the ratios on your two trannys.

          1ST   2ND   3RD   4TH   5TH      ( FINAL)         -CODE

       3.45  1.94   1.29   0.91  0.71        (3.94)           - 7A
       3.45  1.94   1.29   0.91  0.75        (3.94)           - AGS

I`am running an ATH in my 94 Golf same gears as the AGS but the final drive is 3.67 turns 2600 at 100 km.Constant 58 MPG at 3000 RMP

Thanks, at least I know the trannys are the same other than the overdrive. Don't know if they're worth hanging on to for the A2 cars.

If you decide you don't want the 7A transmission (or the AGS would be better, but I am probably dreaming about that, no one ever parts with those things) I will come and get it from you and pay you money for it.

So are these things the same as the newer trans in the A2, other than the switch for the backup lights etc?  Worth hanging onto if they are! Big problem is I'm a "collector", because everytime I decide to get rid of something that's been sitting unused for years, I'll need it about 2 weeks after it's gone. The bodies will go if the 2nd A2 shows up, but then what to keep? The Fox will go complete. Almost nothing fits. Thought I could scavenge a back door handle, no such luck. Rad is different, tranny is different, etc., etc., etc.

Fox trannys fit in some audis (though if it is a four speed I doubt it would be worth it as you'd have to change the linkage and why do all that work for a four speed?).  I have never found a use for a fox radiator though.  The 1.8 in the fox is a straight bolt in to any rabbit, jetta, or golf up to 1992 (but you have to change the mounts).  Digifant and CIS-E are the same too.  I've never tried putting a 7A in anything newer than an 84 rabbit so I don't know if they'd fit or not.  AGS trannys are gold though.  Hard to come by and one of the best A2 trannys ever made.
