bargain 1.9....should I get it
« on: January 06, 2005, 10:30:33 pm »
Let me start off with saying that this is the only 1.9 I have seen available on this coast (east coast of the US).

I have been talking with a local guy who has a "blown" 1.9 NA in his Vanagon. He is willing to sell me the longblock and some assorted goodies for $150.  My question is, is it worth it?

Here's what he says the problem is:
It has a couple of bad valves, they're bent
It has a couple of toasted pistons, from contact with the valves.
It had two instances where oil came out the dipstick tube...what would cause that?

The timing belt was intact and did not slip (to the best of his knowledge).

The engine has about 2000 miles on it since it was purchased from Overland in Calif. about 1.5 years ago.

Here's some pics he sent me:

Again, is it worth it?

Where can I find 1.9 parts in the US?

How much am I looking at for head rebuild?

Also, will my 1.6 Turbo goodies from my Caddy bolt up and work on this engine?  The owner says that is has all the turbo goodies setup on it, but will the 1.6 stuff just bolt right up?

Thanks gang!!!!

I'd buy it for $150 if it was turbo... but I'm sure many other people would buy an N/A.  Looks like you've got about $1000 of cash to throw at that thing before you get her to run.  New pistons/rings valves... head rebuild... going to be a long job if you dont have a lot of time to do it.

How the hell did he do that in only 2000 miles and 1.5 years of service life, if the belt didn't slip?  Plugged pcv might make the dipstick shoot up, but as for the rest of the damage, wtf?

that's a good price for an accessory-less overhaulable core. You'd want a 1.9L intake manifold, as it's intake ports are very different from a 1.6L's. You can bolt 1.6L TD exhaust manifold and turbo stuff to it with few modifications, mostly to oil supply and return. I can get and ship all internal parts for 1.6L and 1.9L's if you need.
I repair, maintain and modify VW's and BMW's.

Well, it sounds like quite a project....and I am willing to take it on.

So, does anyone know if the Vanagon's intake is the same as the intake that would go on the MK1's?

The block and pan are setup for the turbo stuff, as in it has the piston oilers and the line coming off the pan, but that is just capped off.

I think I will try to pick it up and see what the deal is with it.

If nothing else, it will be up for sale for parts!!!!!  eBay does wonders!!!!

If you sell it, put me first on the list!  :D

Hell, if the injection pump is good, it's nearly worth $150.  Is the Injection Pump "turbo ready" as well?

Brendan,

Don't worry, if I go to sell it, you will be on the list!!!

I just have to work out the money with the wife....she's fearful of another non-running engine coming home.

That is a good question, it does not appear to have an LDA on the top...will the LDA from my 1.6 TD fit onto that pump to make it turbo ready or is there something different on the 1.9 pump???

I have a complete longblock AAZ with fairly new head, was running but has a cracked main. Haven't decided what to do with it yet, but first idea would be a find a good block and swap all my parts into it. Second is to sell the whole thing. Re: the inj. pumps, a good 1.6 pump actually works better than the original 1.9 TD unit for power increases, as does a turbo slightly 'bigger' than the original Garrett T2. [The KKK K24 does not make any more power on a stock engine, except in crazy high rpms]
