1.6=1.9?
« on: May 27, 2007, 05:57:38 pm »
I don't even know how I would search for this...

Is the 1.9 AAZ engine a bored/stroked version of the 1.6?

I know that the 1.6 TD exhaust manifold, turbo and downpipe will fit on the 1.9, but will the 1.6 TD parts also fit on the older 1.6?

I'm new to all of this and I'm looking at an early 80's rabbit.

The 1.9TD engine is an evolution of the 1.6 design.

Most 1.6 parts are interchangeable. The biggest difference lies in the mechanical/hydrolic lifter (cam follower) engines. All 1986.5 and later engines have hydrolic lifters that do not require periodic adjustments. These engines have an additionnal oil drain passage on the front of the engine, at the left of the main oil passage. Pre-1986.5 engines have mechanical lifters that require periodic adjustments (shimming) every 15k km I think. These mechanical engines do not have the additionnal oil passage, making retrofitting of an hydrolic head a bit troublesome. Other differences are found in the injection pumps. They all are Bosch VE pumps but some had a 8mm plunger and others had a 9mm plunger.

1.9 turbos require the 1.9 exhaust manifold most of the time. There is one that will bolt to the 1.6 but I forget what one it is. The intake manifolds bolt up but the 1.9s are D shaped while the 1.6s are O shaped.
