hey everybody,
I've got a 1981 VW Rabbit N/A 1.6. She has been puffing grey smelly clouds on the start ever since I bought her. Sure the smoke goes away once it is warmed up, but she still smokes when I do a hard accelleration or going up a hill and the smoke is more blue than black.
On a recent post titled about "over-reving" I think it was jtanguay who said that I need to retart the timing or new injectors.
Does anyone know where I could get new injectors for a Rabbit?
what's your timing set at???
ever since i changed to a really low temp thermostat, my car has been smoking this blackish grey smoke (used to be full black with my old super hot t-stat)... not losing coolant... i do lose a bit of oil but not much...
I havn't had the timing set since I bought it. Do I need to buy one of those VW/Audi timing gauges for the IP? Is there a more simple way to set the timing or a different gauge that I might pick up at store? A timing light maybe?
your best bet is to get the timing kit off ebay or somewhere... you need the camshaft locking plate, then injection pump locking pin, the camshaft removal tool (not really necessary though... just makes it easier i guess)
basically you lock the camshaft in place, loosen the camshaft pulley then leave that... take off the timing hole plug, screw in the gauge... and follow the steps.
1.00mm is probably your best bet.
If you are just checking or adjusting the timing you only need the gauge.
All the other tools are only needed when replacing the belt and even then they can be sudstituted with door hinges and deep sockets
where can you buy that gauge from, and what type of scale does the gauge read.
what is the size on the thread?
E-bay, emiata.com and probably lots of other places. You might want to do a search for vw idi timing tools to see what is closest and cheapest for you.
cheers ill have a search now
