Hello,
I am an American who owns a 1981 Rabbit. It has got the common 1.6 liter N/A diesel four cylinder. However it is missing the timing belt cover. I went to a scrap yard and picked up a cover but it was off of a 1979 Rabbit diesel which probably had a 1.5 liter instead of a 1.6. I tried putting the cover on my engine and it wanted to pop right into place but there was some discrepency. Is there any difference in the timing belt covers from a 1.5 liter to a 1.6?
Yes, there is a difference between the 1.5 covers and the 1.6 covers. The best of my recolection its the little bracket coming off the front of the pump bracket. Where it bolts to the head is the same.
I've had them on and off a thousand times, and still its kind of a pain to get them off and on. The don't just pop on and off, you have to wiener them in there. The belt kind of rubs alittle, the cover bends a little, and suddenly it sort of slips on.
Anybody else have a better explianation?
well i think you hit it right o the nose !! they have been always a pain for me also! i haven't found 1 timing belt cover either 1.5 or 1.6 metal covers that slid on there always been some sort of wrestling involved ! thanks Duane
