Well ok heres the story, im feelin kinda disappointed with my 1.6TD's performance now and even more so when i think about how much money i've put into it.

Mods go as follows, AAZ injector nozzles, intercooler, 2.5 inch turbo back exhaust, turned up fuel, boost controller, cone filter (to make room for intercooler piping).

Now i was out driving with my buddy in his 1.8L 16V (stock as can be) and i am not any faster then him.  I know a giles pump is in order but damnit for what i have now i should be able to smoke a 1.8 16v!!!!

someone tell me im doing alright  :(

ps. my car barely smoked, even at WOT.

Did you drive the car or just rode in it? It's all subjective when driving someone else's car. I was riding with a buddy of mine in his GMC jimmy with the 6 cylinder in it. It felt pretty darn fast but when I think about it, the engine is pulling 5k lbs of metal so it's really not that fast. All of that because you're in the passenger's seat, not being in control. Even if you were driving, the sound of the engine, the gearing, the higher revs make it seems like it much faster when it's not really that much faster.

Just a suggestion, try a one on one on a drag strip or a roll-on on the highway against his car.

I think you next step should be a Giles pump, mercedes injectors/nozzles and P&P

well think of it this way... your 1.6TD came with 68 hp stock...  his 16v 1.8 came with around 110-120hp???

if you say you had no smoke, then there is definitely room for improvement.

if you run 20 psi with a good intercooler and good fueling (with an EGT gauge) your car should easily hit 120 hp, but blowby will hurt...

with a Giles pump you will be pretty happy though... be patient :)

at least for now you can boast about your mileage :)

Your 1.6L 8v Turbo Diesel with an original 68hp is keeping up with a 1.8L 16v with 123hp stock.

I would say that is pretty damn good!

Who cares if its not fast.  It's not supposed to be.  As long as you make enough power for it to be fun and have a bit of pull then who cares?

You're still getting twice the mileage he does!  ;)

A friend of mine has a 2.0L 16v (134bhp) in his beloved MK2 Jetta GTX. If I remember correctly VW's wheel horsepower rating for that 16v is in the 103-108whp range. He also has a Neuspeed 91 or 92 octane chip, modified air filter box, and a slight exhaust upgrade. It feels pretty quick, maybe slightly quicker than a standard 2.0L 16v.

I had an essentially stock 1.6TD in my fully loaded 1997 Golf 2 door with a Giles pump and that's it. Standard 210mm clutch + flywheel. No intercooler, no injector upgrade.

The 16v owner drove my '97 Golf back home for me (I was driving the '91 Jetta 1.6TD) and when merging onto the highway he floored it. He said the Golf felt considerably faster than this 16v. He seriously thought about swapping in a 1.6TD and getting rid of the 16v :D with better fuel economy and uniqueness as bonuses. But the Golf was smoking so much and EGTs went up so I melted the motor eventually (my first engine failure ever, from holding the pedal to the metal for a solid 10 minute on the highway. never again!). The stock T3 also boosted about 28 PSI. The Giles pump was originally intended for my GT20 turbo w/ intercooling and EGT is driver's responsibility so he's not at fault.

Anyway with intercooling, EGT gauge, and a Giles pump you probably shouldn't be slower than a 1.8L 16v. You might even gain some fuel economy after getting rid of your old pump. Results vary I guess :)

I told ya you need more fuel   Next time you are down here give me a call and I will do the governor mod, and do some lda mods, to get your car moving a bit faster until you can get a giles pump. Your car runs great you just need more fuel to get the power level you want.
