I got my TD started! Small Issue though..

I asked on the Vortex, but have only got half and half responses.

Here's the problem-
I start it, and it idles. It's pretty loud, has a loose belt, and has kind of a mettallic knocking noise comin from the top of the valve cover. I'm not sure if valves can be adjusted on diesels or if the timing is off, but for god's sake, the damn thing runs! I just can't get it to drive. As soon as I get on the throttle at all, it starts to accelerate on it's own and accelerate all the way up to what I assume is redline. And then it holds there. This makes me nervous, and also bothers me because the accelerator cable does not move at all.

So, current suggestion has been it is dieseling. How can I be sure? Any other suggestions? Is it possible something in the pump is messed up?

A metallic knocking noise could be a maladjusted valve or three or it could be deadly piston-valve impact. I'd get that check out before anything else.

Not sure what might be causing your runaway problems. Could be a broken governor spring.

If it's a clacking sound it might be worn injectors. If you have a solid lifter head then yes the valves can be adjusted, it is the exact same as a gasser in that regards (other then clearances)

You say that when it runs away it goes to redline and then holds there, that leads me to believe it is a problem with the pump and not blow-by because it if was caused by blow-by it wouldn't stop at redline

I know I am a little late in my reply, but this seems like a pump problem eh? I was kinda thinking the same thing. Honestly, I'm not sure if the noise is just not normal and I'm not used to it. It' seems to run well aside from the running away problem. If I were to post a video, would it make it easier to diagnose?

Try unscrewing the residual fuel screw a little. it is on the top, back of the pump, under the LDA, and looks more like it should just adjust the idle, but it doesn't.

And that might help you think? Should I do it while the engine is on or off?

While it is off. I'd unscrew it a little, try it, and repeat if necessary. Just count the turns in case you need to turn it back for some reason.
