After its winter sleep the motor ('97 AAZ) in my westy is acting a bit odd.
It's doesn't like the cold starts. It starts to fire right away but with lots of grey blue smoke rough idle tendancy to stall.
When it's hot i have to crank it for a long time before it catches then it runs fine.
Once it's running and warm it's fine and as normal.
Any thoughts and comments.
thanks
Martin

Leaky pump?
Air in the lines?
Retarded timing?

Hard start when hot. I bet for a bar head and rotor in the fuel pump.
This can also affect the start when cold. And if the pump is leaking symptome are worst.
We can rebuilt your fuel pump if you whant for low cost.

i don't think it's glow plugs because it starts right up when it's cold it just runs really rough. i don't see any significant airbubbles in the lines on hot start up which is when i need to crank it for a long time.
could you tell me more aboutthe "bar head and rotor issue"
thanks

When you are having a hto start how long has the engine been sitting for? Do the GPs come on at all? You might have a problem with the GL system (relay, sensor etc)

it is hard to start up even if i've only been sitting for like 5 min. after running for a while (30min, well up to temp.)

It is possible that the hard starting is an issue with grounds/conenctions for the starter and battery. I had that happen to my rabbit once. You may want to start there since good connections are never a bad thing
