Some oil in the intake tract?
« on: May 14, 2007, 06:08:27 pm »
So while I was installing a boost controller and boost gauge, I noticed there was some oil along the intake tract.  Some around the intake pipe and compressor, some around the tube from the turbo to the intake mani, etc.  Its nothing excessive, no drips or anything.  And about 3 weeks ago, I installed a boost gauge.  I teed the line going to the LDA.  I used this high pressure clear tubing we have at work.  From 3 weeks ago, I've notced a bit of splatter/misting of oil at the very beginning of the tube.  Again, just a tiny bit.

Is this semi-normal for a Turbo Diesel?  I know this can often mean the seals are going bad in the turbo, but like previous posts, I'm kind of unaware of this is considered "OK" in a turbo diesel.  I'm guessing its not.  However, the car/engine has only 177k km's on it (110-115k miles) and all oil changes until 165k (100k miles) were done at the dealer, on time.  I've done only synthetic 5w40 since at 6-7000kms intervals.  Which doesnt seem to make sense why the seals would be blown or leaking already.

Anyways, any help is greatly appreciate once again!! :)

The crank case breather vents into the intake on the car, as the engine wears and combustion gasses blow by the rings, it creats more pressure in the crank case. this in turn tends to blow atomised oil out of the crank case and into your intake where it condenses into an oil slick where it gets processed by the turbo and sucked back into the motor.

All engines that have their crank case vented in this mannor have a bit of oil in the intake. This is normal, it is the quantity you will need to be concerned about. I'll leave that to others that have better knowledge than I

edit: from the sounds of things you have nothing to be concerned about.
My motor's intake on the other hand is dripping oil within minutes of cleaning it all up. I think I may have a slight problem....
