it would be pretty easy to tell if the pin won't fit.
there is a hole for the injection pump locking tool. it slides right through the sprocket. if it's off by a bit (can't stick something clear through) then it skipped a tooth somehow.
jimfoo - "what does the pin indicate, and what should i be looking for? any pics?"
burn_your_money - "Ill give that a go, makes sense.. i could do that tonight"
http://www.emiata.com/DieselVW/IDI.htm I forgot the exact size, but a big metric bolt is about the same size, 10mm maybe?
-PROGRESS SO FAR-
Got around to installing the injectors and glow plugs... tooks a couple of hours (had a few problems with the tight fitting of the glow plugs behind the pump).
all done tho, but you wouldn't guess-still giving me idle problems on start... it looks as if im goin to have to check the timimng...
so what is the procedure?
set, turn the engine to TDC, and then fit the injector pin?
and don't forget the camshaft locking plate... you don't want the camshaft moving

once that's locked loosen the camshaft sprocket. that will enable the pulley to turn a little bit for the timing.
