How much boost do you run?
« on: May 10, 2007, 07:12:00 pm »
Hi,

Just a quick question to give me an idea about something...

When driving at a steady 80mph, how much boost pressure are you guys registering on the guage?  I mean for all different types of turbos, VNT or not, the more different turbos the better.

Also would you mind saying what type of boost control system you have and what your max boost pressure is.

Its for a litle project / bet I have going at university!

Thanks

Greg

what kind of bet???  the motor will tend to make more boost at higher speeds... i think after 60 mph you can expect around 10 psi, and going uphill can spike right up to your max if you let it...

I had a borg warner GM8 on my 1.6 and it wouldnt make boost at 80 mph unless you mashed it. I swithched to a k24 and at 80 mph its around 6 or 7 psi. On 1.9 with a ko3 at that speed i bet its really close to its max boost around 10-12. on my 1.6 with the k24 im currently running 27 psi.

Hi,

Cheers for the answers!!

Jtanguy - Just 80mph flat road, as little throttle as it needs to keep you there.

The project is turbocharging a certain engine and basically some discussion about transient boost levels and whether we need to address a certain issue or not.  I would test the different options myself but its theory only at the moment and we dont have access to lots of turbos!!  I realise that backpressure and flow losses will set the boost at this level as well but this gives me a great idea and benchmark!!

I am also really interested for myself as well, I have a couple of turbocharged cars, one runs 12psi at 80mph, the diesel runs 7psi on the VNT, which I can of course change.  The real strain on the turbo is of course moments of acceleration (on the shaft and bearings) but it seems to me that say 15 psi steady state would be quite alot.

ANY MORE?!!
 :D

I am usually running 3-5PSI going 70MPH, I've never really cruised at 80 in the truck.

With the gearing in my car, I'm turning 3,650rpm at 73mph.  That's probably close to what you guys turn at 80mph.  At 73mph, I'm showing 6-7psi.
