Dumb question? How do you remove injector 2 quickly?
« on: May 08, 2007, 05:37:49 pm »
Last time I did a compression test it ended up being "cold" because I took the top off my pump (gave me an excuse to do the governor mod at least). How do you get injector #2 out without messing with the pump? I normally use a deep 27mm socket but the pump is in the way.

I was looking at 27mm wrenches but it looks like the head of the wrench is too big to fit next to the head in the injector pocket. Is there some special tool people use or will I have to take the head off the IP again?

i use a deep well socket that I ground the bejeepers out of to clear the LDA.  I also ground down an extension so the tightening / loosening process is on the center axis of the injector.

Thanks, I will have to try tipping the whole pump forward. Luckily my dial gauge with IP adapter came in the mail a few weeks ago

practice using it first with the pump at it's current setting to make sure that the numbers you are reading make sence, nothing worse then trying to learn how to use a tool when there are alot of variables in the equation.

The biggest difference is in the socket, a proper Snap On 27mm diesel inj socket works most of the time, a regular Craftsmen or other brand is way too thick. notice I said most of the time...
Be sure nothing is binding as you can easily break the injector threads in the head thinking the binding is the issue and it really is the threads getting to tight...work the inj back and forth using lots of lube.

I finally was able to tilt the pump forward. I was actually surprised how easy it is to set the IP timing with the dial gauge. Only problem I had was when I loosened the IP anchor bolts. For some reason diesel started dripping from the main seal. After I timed the IP and tightened the anchor bolts, the leaking seemed to stop. I found that pretty weird. I hope the pump will not start leaking now.
