I'm finally getting my engine back in the frame. Got the EGT installed in the adapter I made to fit the VNT to the k-14 manifold. I think I decided what I'm going to do about controlling the VNT. Basically I will copy Named TinTin's design, but I will have a choke type cable that I will also be able to pull so that I get the most possible boost at any throttle level, which is what I want for off-road. The thing that sucks is having to re-do my SS exhaust since the new turbo sits in a different place, has a different flange, and exhausts towards the front instead of the rear. I got some aluminum tubing at the scrap yard for $6

, for my IC hookup. I'll put some pics up some time, but I may post them under the non-VW section. Back to work.

Quick question about IC piping. Is it better to use a smaller tube to run to the IC to keep the air hot as the IC is more efficient with heat transfer at higher temps, or run larger tube for less restriction? I did my first Al weld to make an adapter for the turbo flange yesterday, and while it isn't perfect, it turned out a lot better than I thought. I got the exhaust redone, but also have a question about that. How important are those flex sections as I don't have one?

I haven't seen any IC's use small piping - even though bigger piping means more lag, too, the inefficiencies caused by the bends would be worsened by small pipe. Also as a diesel you want the benifit of low restriction on the "light cruise" mode for best economy. I'd go with "larger than" the intake pipe on the manifold - especially if I can get a 110hp TDI intake for you - it's about a 2.25" intake on it - big!
Exhaust - since your motor twists along lengthwise, it's not so big a deal. I didn't have a flex on the motor when it was in my Samurai - it was supported at the bell housing and rubber-hung straight out the back.
My IC is 2 1/2" in and out, but the outlet from the turbo is maybe 1 1/4" at best, So I guess I'll step it up right away. I was going to use the 2 1/2 all the way to the intake. Now I get to test my Al welding skills some more.
You can also identify 1.9 by the oil return fitting for the turbo, it is in the rear of the block (if the 1.9 or 1.6 IDs are rusted away), where 1.6 td have a fitting on the oil pan for the drain.
1.9 td heads have smooth sides on the valve cover vs tdi's which have three insets in the front of the valve cover.
