Feeler: 97 1.9L TD Jetta
« on: May 02, 2007, 08:32:12 am »
250,000KM.  Manual (5 speed).  Keyless entry, sunroof.  Good summer and winter tires.  Forest green.
Recently done:
-Crank Gear Mod,
-Timing Belt (230K)
-New Rad
-Front Brakes and Rotors
-TDI Altenator Pully (no vibration) and belt
-New valves and lifters
-Head Gasket

The bad:
-Exhaust rattles a bit around 1500 rpm
-A couple of rust spots around wheel well size of a quarter.

Have been saving up for something newer...If you're not interested in buying, let me know what you think it might be worth.  I'm in Toronto.

I bought my 97 Jetta GL with a 1.9 TD (AAZ) last July. It had 269,000 kms on it then (much higher now). No keyless entry, but does have the factory alarm. No sunroof. Kenwood AM/FM/CD deck. Minor surface rust on drivers door. Four decent winter tires. Good interior, but needed a date with the vacuum cleaner. Red paint was faded but some polish brought it back pretty....rubbing compound will do much better though when I have some spare time.

I was told the turbo was new and that the motor had been rebuilt about 35,000 kms prior to that, but I am having some doubts about that. But the car seems to be running fine.

Purchase price: $4000.

well if you bought a '97 jetta and did everything that he has done to it.. the price would probably rise to 8500 for sure... unless you do your own work.

honestly if i were you... i would keep driving it until it died.  by that time the money you will have saved up for a new car will be huge.  that car will pretty much go another 100'000km's without much trouble at all.

Yeah- that's what I'm starting to think.  I think I could get around 5K for it...but if it last another year- a year and a half, I'll be ready to buy a new car.

If you can get $5000 take while you can! Newer TDi's are selling for under $5000 now (97-99), even the odd mk4 (99+) car is in that price range now with that kind of mileage especially in the GTA.
Those mk3 bodies are really dropping fast in price, either keep it for a few years till it is rusted out or get rid of it fast while you can replace it with a tdi new.

problem being with the newer TDI's dropping in price.. is that half of them are in serious need of tune ups.  don't forget that there must be a reason for someone selling their cars... they just don't want to deal with the problems with it!  and diesels are known for longetivity, but at the same time, maintenance is quite expensive.

timing belts... head work... then the price slowly creeps back up.  add in new brakes, rubber, and you're back up into 10k territory.

yea but imo it's worth around $8500 pending a complete inspection of course...

but the problem is that nobody will pay as much as a car is worth
