How common is it to break a main bearing cap when running 27 psi of boost?
Thanks
Heard of two running less than that in the UK, one bolt and one a cap... the cap one, running std boost on a refurb engine about 2 years old. The other a bolt running 20psi or so and went when cruising at low boost.
What length bolts are yours - the M10x 65mm or the AM10x80's ?
Not sure what bolts I have.
I saw a post on here where a guy made up what looked like 3/4 by 3/4 inch bars that go under the caps for more support. does anyone know where that thread is?
No, been looking as we are getting a bit nervous here
The std. boost engine with the broken cap, I now have. Owner repaired hole in block with plastic metal (nice) and put the broken cap back on with a steel bar over the top, and then drove it for quite a while, nervously and not too fast - just fine
The steel reinforcing bars remind me of the Ford tuners in the 60's and 70's who made a habit of doing this on the 1300's and 1600's over here... keep looking for that thread and let us know here if you find it!
Another UK VW GTD poster says that the longer main bolts are for a thicker cap, presumably later engines. But because the caps come line-bored as part of the short-engine and not separately, ETKA doesn't show a specific part nunber for the caps alone...
Many thanks for your post, but you haven't said what happened to yours - exactly
what you are describing is a main girdle for the bottom end easy to make with the right tools and makes the bottom end a lot more stable
That's a cool, but alot of work.
What I saw and I'm pretty sure it was on this site was a pic of a broken main cap and he pugraded it with a steel bar and longer bolts.
Thanks

I think you were looking for a picture from Audi 80.
It was 5 cylider 2,4D with 80mm bolts (5 cylinder aaz) It was a little modified, but not much ~140whp. No more cracked caps: pic  Used 12.9 allen head bolts.
 Anyone used that? This is pretty much same thing I have worked for my engine...
$400 that is cheap for a bottom end that won't shift and brake things how much dose a 1.6 td sell for now a days with the current price of fuel
