I thought it might be Jan 23, 1987, but my friend's engine is stamped 01 23 86 and I found it hard to believe that both engines would happen to have been built on the same day, one year apart.

Besides, VW wouldn't make it THAT easy to decode, now would they?

or, maybe I should smoke less...

Mine is stamped 0123 85....

I think we can rule out the 0123 being jan 23.
