Has anyone tried to put either a vw diesel engine or a mercedes diesel from a 300d in a small truck such as an s10 or a ranger?
My dad wants a small diesel truck for his buisness and since no one makes one i will have to build one.
The biggest problem is adapting the engine to the trans.
any info would be appriciated thanks.
ACME Adapters has a kit to put a vw diesel into a suzuki or toyota. An older toyota truck (must be a 4 cyl 22R, not V6 for the kit to work) would make a great diesel truck.
Of course, they did make them diesel from the factory, but we didn't get many stateside.

I know someone that attempted a Volvo V6 diesel (actually a vw engine?) in a newer S10, gave up and sold the engine. He thought he didn't have enough room..........
If you can get hold of a 82-86 Oldsmobile FWD 4.3L V6 Diesel Engine it will bolt right in, the S-10 uses the same Bell housing as the FWD cars. You'll need to get the accessories like Alternator, Belts, brackets from a 82-86 Oldsmobile RWD 4.3L V6 Diesel Engine.
The engines aren't too plentiful nowadays but, seem like there is one or a parts car or a driver on ebay at least once month.
up here in Ottawa there is a guy how built a Ford Ranger with Mercedes 300SD powertrain, 5 cyl 3.0L turbo diesel and auto trans from Mercedes. i have seen it a couple times, custom hood cause the motor was too tall at the front.

Volvo V6 diesel? I only know of the inline six diesel.
Once thought about putting one of those in one of the I6 Cherokees...
If it's a two wheel drive truck, the transmission issue is a non-issue. Just use the existing mercedes transmission, and have a custom driveshaft made (about $150 I think). I don't know that VW made any regular longitudinal transmissions -- maybe from a dasher? But if you can find one of those, that will work too.
I've got a nice little toyota diesel truck. But they're extremely rare, and hard to find parts for. Even though I like the design of its engine better than the VW, I might end up replacing it with a VW if I can't get it to stop burning oil.
