Extremely loud ticking noise, white smoke and power loss
« on: April 20, 2007, 06:05:56 pm »
I've got this jackhammer loud ticking noise coming from the cylinder head I think. There's a lot of white smoke and loss of power. There are no fuel leaks. It happened a few hours ago with no telltale sings of anything wrong.

IMHO, one of my "rebuilt" GTD injector took a dump. What do you guys think?

Or a head gasket.  Some other things to consider:   does the smoke smell like diesel or coolant ??  Is your coolant level going down ??  Is the cooling system pressurizing itself ??

Ticking does sound like a misbehaving injector for sure.

when andy2 helped me change the injectors on my car, upon first startup it ran as you said... felt like one of them was sticking real bad...  i think it was smoking white too!  needless to say, he revved it until it got un-stuck.

i installed gtd injectors from smog that he pop tested for 160 bar too.

I didn't drive the car long enough after the ticking started to notice anything unusual (actally I was 100 meters from my parking spot when it happened). It smells like usual diesel exhaust except thicker :P Cooling system pressurizes ok. I didn't lose any fluid. Even if it were the HG, the head is being replaced anyway.

I got these injectors from him too. They ticked from the first day they were installed and never really ran well (three cylinders when cold...). I'm getting some genuine mercedes injectors rebuild by bosch.

is this sindce you changed some things, sounds to me a timing problem or wring camplate offset if you putted in a new plunger or so.

The only work done to the car was upping the fueling a bit a few weeks ago. It may be related but if these injectors couldn't handle a little bit more fuel, then they were junk.
