Hi,
I just picked up a 1.6TD to swap into my caddy, as my 1.6 NA finally quit. Is there a date code on the block that will tell me the year of this motor? Anyone know where it would be located and how to decode it?
Does anyone know a good place to buy a new clutch? Motor is stock (for now) so I don't need anything too serious, just a good clutch at a good price. Any info? I looked around in the vendors section but didn't see anything.
Also, as long as the flywheel is off, is there an advantage to having it lightened on a stock motor? If so, what would be a good weight?
Thanks!
There is a stamp on the front of the head by the coolant manifold.
Ask around at local shops for stock ones. I found a VW shop and was able to get a clutch kit for about half the prcice of everyone else.
Thanks b_y_m. I went out and looked at the head and there's this crazy clock on there, but I'm not sure what it means. Does the outer ring mean it was made Jan 23, 1987? What about the second ring (0-9), and the 11 in the center?
Anyone?

Wow... I've been looking for an answer for telling the date of a cylinder head for a while now
http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=6854&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15rumor has it... if it is a hyd head, it is ok to use for TD or NA, and is of the same alloy.
the prechambers and valves had different materials pre '86
i think that rumour is true... i just checked ETKA, and ME MF RA SB all have the same head
valves and camshaft included.
this is great info because i just bought a parts car with a nice rebuilt head... ohhh yea!!!
Well, I've taken a picture of mine.. it says 88
according to the info up top with what janb and jtanguay said, this head would be interchangeable with a TD would it not?
here's a pic of the casting on the head
Bump : Does anyone know how to decode the "clock" stamp on the head?
Thanks!!
I'm wondering the same thing. The head on my car now that I have to replace has a different symbol there. The numbers from top to bottom are 23 11 8.
