"Ultra Diesel"
« on: April 19, 2007, 01:50:18 pm »
Well my car is out of order for a little while untill I get my fuel pump rebuilt. It started leaking so bad that when it was cold starting there would be a small pool of diesel on the ground... The diesel has been leaking onto a coolant hose as well and eventually it weakened burst open (fortunately when it was idling in the driveway). Also, my transmission is still leaking due worn inner bearings.

Anyways on to my question. I was at shell filling up my girlfriend's car when I saw that they had "Ultra Diesel". After a bit of research I recieved this response.

Matt,

Ultra Diesel is our premium grade of diesel. The difference is that Ultra Diesel
has a higher dosage of detergent additives, and also it contains de-icers,
corrosion inhibitors and demulsifiers. regular use of Ultra diesel will help to
keep the fuel intake system free of deposits thus maintaining the engine
efficiency.
Attached is a bulletin on Shell Ultra Diesel for your reference.

Thanks

And what was attatched...

Does this sound legitimate? Is it worth the 3 cents per litre? I have my doubts.

Dunno if it will actually increase performance but it seems legit. Is the price the same? Probably not...

Or it's a spin on the ultra low sulpher diesel all refineries have been mandated to produce starting jan 1 '07
This is to coinside with the new EPA regulations regarding diesel vehicle emmisions for Jan 1 '07 The next big crunch comes in 2010 (or was that 2011?)

Diesel is Diesel. All the stations buy their fuel from the same few refineries. The only difference is the additives they put in it.

I ran a tank of Shell ultra diesel. Nothing fancy, no noticable power gains or increased MPG. I know that one tank is hardly enough to form an opinion on though. It's only $1.50 more per tank

they don't mention anything about increased Cetane rating. I think Sunoco gold diesel has higher Cetane though.

You guys can get more than one grade of diesel??  :?

Around here, all I have seen is just plain old diesel.

I add Power Service with each fill up for added lubricity, cleaning and a cetane boost.

Ahhh but it would be nice to get a Dakota with a 4BT Cummins wouldnt it???

Just imagine what a tire roaster it would be with a worked 6BT out of its bigger brother.

Around here (Mid Michigan) you see "Premium" diesel.  From what I understand, it is #1 diesel whereas regular diesel is #2.  There is a slight cetane increase for #1 compared to #2.  Most gas stations only carry #2.

hi, here in Germany some gas stations have something like that too. Called V-Power (Shell) for instance.
After my opinion it really increases something...but not the engine power nor the top speed or something like that but only the income of Shell & co and it brings tax to the state`s pocket.
For compare:
Normal Diesel: ~1,10 € /l
V-Power       :~ 1,20 €/l

So I decided to drive with used vegoil, cleaned to 1µm for 0,49€/l but that`s another topic..

i found my 97 aaz wouldnt give as many kms/tank with the ultra diesel compared to the regular shell diesel.  tried a few different times at different season - always worse

i havent tried it in my tdi though
Now: 00 2dr Golf TDI, 03 Jetta Wagon TDI, 02 2500HD Duramax - :)
Then: 69 SC Transporter, 84 Rabbit GTI, 87 Fox GL, 91 Golf IDI, 96 Passat Wagon TDI, 97 Jetta IDI - :(
