Well i was replacing the speedo cable on my Golf.I got a after market cable for it.Well i took the gear off the old cable and put it on the new one.But for some reason it did not want to stay on and fell into the trans.After trying to get it out.The gear diside to slip back into the trans and where i can not get to it.SO my question is what should i do?Thanks :cry:

Ideally you will seperate the tranny and take it out. Maybe draining the fluid will bring it to the bottom where you can get it out.
Worst case you can drive it as is and the thing will turn into little pieces of plastic in the tranny. Then you do a tranny flush (flush, not just a drain and refill) and you should be good to go with minimal damage.
A1 trannies can usually be found fairly cheap so unless you have personal ties to the tranny I'd just drive it as it.
This is coming from the guy with 5 spare trannies in my garage though....

Actually, you may just be able to remove the fifth housing and get it out. Look at www.brokevw.com

isnt there a sort of 'grappling hook' type tool that you can lower into the tranny? i have one for my pc repair... shouldn't be that hard to get it out.. worse case scenario is that you will need another plastic gear.

Leave it and change the tranny fluid once or twice. It's soft plastic and the gears will grind it up without damaging themselves.

I lost two, and never had a problem with the trannys after.

well dont you think that two gears compressing something as hard as plastic may exert too much force on the bearings? (say for example, if something got stuck and went through a set of gears)

would probably be in your best interest to at least attempt to fish it out... i have a tool i use for computer work... three metal lines with a hook type end and they extend and retract with a spring. great for picking up those little pieces that slip away! :lol:
