I heard that diesel must use a certain type of oil. I looked in my Chilton repair manual and it just gives you a chart that tells what kind to use for different temperatures. I was told however, that they need something like "S"class not "C" class. Could someone give me the rundown?

A diesel needs "C" not "S". "C" stands for compression ingnition. "S" stands for spark ignited. I run rotella and i am very happy with the results.

looks like you have a non turbo diesel. you can run any C rated oil. run something like 5 or 10w40. in summer you can run 15w40, but makes for hard cold starts in the winter so dont forget to change it.

rotella is pretty famous. the "million mile oil" :wink:

He's in the US. His options are 10W30, 15W40, in dyno oil or 5W40 synthetic that are CI-4 rated.

There is a Moble 10W40 synthetic that has a CF rating, with not a single OEM diesel endorsement. Run at your own perril.

Or he can chase Amsoil bumper stickers and get "certified" oil in any grade desired.

Rotella 15w-40 for me. I run it year round, but I live far enough south where it's not a problem in the winter.
