Somebody has the specs of this beast?

Also, manual or auto?

Did the tranny came from VW or Volvo?

Some pics too (960 GLE) if you have some...

I don't think it was ever available in the 960 (only in the 760) in the US market, maybe in Canada?

Versions with and without intercooler exist. Not sure about the numbers difference though but it was worthwhile.
Current car: '92 Fiat Croma TDID, similar to VW TDI only completely mechanical DI - with VE-style pump.
Previous car: '84 mk2 diesel, w/1.6TD swap ('86 hyd engine), 9mm plunger, KKK K24.

My mistake, 760, not 960.

A guy ran 13.1 on the quarter mile with one of those????

I read that you have to reajust the valves every 15 000 miles though (25 000 km), that's pretty frequent.

These engines were on the LT vans in Europe.

They are very though, but don't like not being run oftenly (oil cooking in the head or something).

The only info missing is the trannies' ratio and final drive. :D

They had an electric fifth gear, anybody has more info on that?  :?:

A volvo mechanic that I worked with loved these engines.  He said that he only checked valve adjustment every timing belt change (40,000 miles?) and even then he said that they usually didnt need it.  He has only needed one head rebuilt on all of the ones he has worked on, that was due to owner abuse- using cheap oil and not changing it on regular intervals.  He talked that owner in to selling him the car for cheap, spent $500 for a new head and drove the car for 10 years.  ;D  He said that with a minor wastegate adjustment and installing an intercooler from the 2.3 turbo gasser cars, along with enrichment screw adjustments the cars were faster than the turbo 4-cylinders and the v6 volvos.

And the electronic overdrive is fairly common in older volvos, it was a four-speed transmission and you hit a button on the shifter to engage overdrive.  Gassers had it too.

But this button was on automatics or manuals????

I've seen this kind of overdrive on automatics, but not on manuals.

It was on the manuals....not sure about the automatics.

Does anyone know what kind of bolt pattern that big 6 uses? is it the same as the 5cyl?

I've heard the engines won't last 50K km if you live close to a freeway.  They need to be warned up before running them hard or they'll break...then you put in a Ford 5.0.  The overdrive was bolted on the back of the transmission so I imagine you could run it as an 8 or 10 gear.

I don't think the overdrive unit has the torque capacity to handle being engaged in first gear, or second or third for that matter. The factory setup is locked out until the tranny is in 4th to protect the overdrive box.

I'd buy a Volvo with a VW diesel, never anything with a Ford pos engine in it...

That's cool how the overdrive works...

Do you have to press the clutch to engage the overdrive, or you just pull the switch????

Anybody has a little diagram???

This is the answer I got on a Volvo forum. So the OD could be changed by itself to a taller gear...interesting!

Quote
Electric? It is electric in the sense that you push a button that is a contact switch which flips a relay which provides power to close a solenoid which allows fluid pressure to engage a conical clutch in a mechanical overdrive unit that is separate from the transmission.
I hate the overdrive system, ODs are weak, complicated, take more fluid, have electrical gremlins in the wires in the tranny tunnel as well as the switch and relay, and are just a nasty system to aviod using a proper 5 speed box, which volvo finnally did in europe in 94 wiht the M90.
I am very gentle on my OD manual, and use the clutch going into and out of OD, but it is not quite as tight as it used to be and I am guessing that it is pretty near death.

Apparently VW just stuck two extra cylinders onto the 1.6 IDI engine. The resulting contraption is troublesome if you don't baby it, because the oil system is just not right for a six. Resulting in valve problems, cooling problems, warping, belt busting etc etc.. even the NA version will not last nearly as long as the 1.6TD. It was designed as a 4 cylinder. Still passable as a 5cyl (audi) but 6 was just too much. It created the odd situation that Volvo 7-series and 9-series petrol models tend to last longer (mileage) than the diesels. That should really be the other way around.

For instance, my friend has a D24T under his workbench with a 4-piece camshaft :P Looking to put a regular D24 head on. But his current D24 now runs so well (after a tuning session) that this project has been postponed for a while :) They DO run really smooth, IF they run and are timed properly. As an inline six should!

2383 GTD who used to post on the old host board, but has since had all of his info wiped out, had a 24dt, into a volvo 244, he had also put in a custom electric oiling system to remedy the oiling issues, sombody might remember more then I do for just how it was setup, he also had an electric fuel pump that was set to come on at a certin boost level, a two stage boost controler, and a few other tricks. Last I heard he ran a 13.1 quater, which is as quick as any TD or TDI in noth america, and not far off of as quick as anyone anywhere. Im sure that some of our senior members will remeber more of the specs then I do, I have a tough time remebering what I ate for breakfast this morning   .

What ever happened to 2383 GTD? I recall that he used to post regularly and seemed to be having a good time. Then one day he had disappeared and all his posts were erased.
