I found a local guy with a what looks to be complete 1.6 turbo engine.
Solid lifter head.
The block is going to need to be rebuild and the head will be replaced, it looks like the idler shaft pulley worked loose and allowed the timing belt to jump a few teeth causing the pistons to contact the valves for a long time, the valves actually embedded them self's in the pistons, I mean they hit enough times there is aluminum mushrooming out from the impact areas.
The head is also cracked between one of the valves and a precup. it also looks like it may have had to thin of a head gasket on it because it looks like the pistons made contact with the precup area also.
Anyway, I walked away with all the turbo components and a good base to build off for $100.00.
Question, can I use my NA solid lifter head if I have it fitted with turbo exhaust valves? I have what I think is a good solid head and a good hydro head as well.
I guess I could just have the solid turbo head tested before I bail on it, the crack may be just in the surface.
I'm excited just the same. Gonna get the pump off to Giles and do a rebuild on the bottom end, should be fun when I'm done.

i think the solid lifter N/A heads are inferior to the TD solid lifter & hydro heads. (both N/A and turbo hydro heads have the same p/n's)

How is that possible?
They are the same casting so besides the valves and cam grind what else could be different?
dan
Ok, so as I stated the valves are differant.
Injectors are no biggie, have them out of the turbo head and the NA hydro head.
Bigger bolts? machine shop can fix that, again no big deal.
dan
Being a TD that engine should have 12mm bolts alreaady although I have been wrong before.
I'd imagine that the crack is superficial but definitly have it tested. I have a solid lifter block that I'll be parting out if there is anything good in it. The guy pulled the injectors a year years back and it's just been sitting in the car

Ya, I'll have it tested for sure. I actually have three solid heads but only one is Turbo. Both the NA heads are in good shape. As is the Hydro head.
That's the head I would really like to use but I'm not that excited about having the extra hole plugged, just seems like to much of a possible failure area in the future.
dan
the extra hole is probably just for extra oil pressure for the hydraulic lifters.
the picture i have shown indicates the changes that VW made to incorporate the turbocharger. Mech TD heads have all of those changes (12mm head bolts etc) but mech n/a heads do not.
i thought the bumped injection pressure was due to longer fuel lines... but i never had a source?
should b from the camplate lift
