Did VW make an auto trans for any of the mk2 Jetts?
I really REALLY want to keep this car. I just love Diesel's especially the VW but I'll be damned if I'm going to do rush hour in a hand shaker. I prefer a slushbox even if Ihave to give a few MPG to get it.
But... as I think about it I cant honestly say I ever remember seeing one.
Anyone got one and they would rather have a 5spd?

Yes they made one and I would think that someone with one would probably eagerly exchange with you.

i dunno about that... most people with a good decent automatic trans would probably keep it.
they're decent transmissions, but i'd recommend a nice thick tranny fluid additive like lucas. saved my tranny from ultimate death
and its not just a few MPG... its more like... 5 city, and about 10-20 highway (depending on how fast you drive of course... 100km/h is about 3400-3500 rpm )
wait is there a way to swap gears in an auto???
you might as well find a donor car. as you will be needing the shifter box, and the neutral safety switch if the car is ever going to change hands etc.
my car had a broken shift button, so the shifter could accidently be put into a bad gear on say... the highway... lol very scary! but thats VW

I have an automatic gasser and I'm only getting 27 mpg. A standard gasser with the same motor would get at least 35 mpg so you lose quite a bit in fuel economy. Mine actually started out as a 16V GLI with a 5 speed but I changed it over to an 8V auto for the wife to learn to drive, but as soon as she's comfortable driving a standard it's out of there and a Diesel and a 5 speed is going in. I've only ever seen one Diesel auto in my life and you'd think they'd have to be terribly sluggish on takeoff. I'd keep the 5 speed. Even in rush hour traffic they're still a lot more fun. Mine revs close to 3000 rpm at 100 km/h.

Well I'm obviously going to run it with the hand shaker for a while and I wont be changing it out unless I just happen to come across a slush box.
And where i'm not looking to hard it probably wont happen.
the summer around here isnt usually to bad as far as traffic goes but the winters are horrible, you would think people in Utah would know how to drive in the snow but they dont. 64 miles = 2.5 hrs travel time.
Stop and go the whole way. No 5 spd is going to last.

The original 5 speed and clutch lasted until 595,000 kms in my 85 Jetta. I put one in with 370,000 on it and the car has 726,000 on it now. They're pretty tough. I'm scared to death of my automatic blowing up. Lol.

In my travels I have only seen one mk2 diesel auto, I could have bought it but the car had no air fitler and no coolant.
