Garrett t3 upgrade help needed
« on: April 01, 2007, 08:22:55 am »
I am looking for some help with information on a Garrett t3 mod.  This will be going on a 1.6/1.9 hybrid motor.  This will be a hot street driver.  Fuel will not be a problem, I am going with the PERFORMANCE DIESEL INJECTION setup and upgraded nozzles.  Flow will be good, Port and Polish, 2.5 down pipe and exhaust. Possible the big dollar individual tube, pulse system. Ported intake.  Head will be o-ringed.  ARP studs etc.  1st step up looks to be the .48 hotside. What power increase/flow is this good up to?  What is the next step up after this? Keeping with the t3 what other options do I have? This motor will have a bit lower CR so I can up the boost.  I will also be installing the 1.9IDI Pass. Perf. cam so EGT's will be reduced, allowing for more fuel and boost.
Options gentlemen.  Let's here them.  Throw them out here for discussion.

Water meth setup would do nice for keeping it cool when you get into the high boost, but really if you are going to get into the expense of custom manifolds, get a new GT series turbo. With either a 20 or 22, a 20 would be a good place to start as it would be a good high pressure turbo for twins if you ever decide to go that route.

If you are determined to keep the t3 a .48 is about as big as you want, if you are going to keep it in normal rev range's, if you are planing on running this more like a gasser into the 6000 rpm+ where a .48 or bigger becomes valuable, then you should look at having the valve relief's machined deeper 1mm or so and get Dave to make you a bigger cam to go with it, as well as HD valve springs, and retainers. If you are going to build the whole engine put ARP or Raceware Mainstuds and rod bolts in it, and look at getting you rods at least shot peened and maybe polished.

What I am getting at with all of this is, unless you are willing to push the envlope .48 is as big as you would want, and may still be as big as you want in a street car, in which case the best way to get more boost and cooling is to go twins.

O-ring both the head and the block not just the head. Oil coolers and fuel coolers are highly recomended as well.

Thanks, already planning on the arp route, The intake will be the one Dave offers,  not sure which one its based off.  Do you mean a bigger cam then the one dave is selling as his performance cam?  I was planning on the head o-ring because I will be sending the head up to dave for the port and polish.  Do you think someone will be able to match up the rings if I need to get the block done local?  It will be way too expensive to ship a block. I would like to be able to rev this high if the situation calls for it.  The rods will be shot peened.  I would love to get a gt22.  I guess it a matter of choices.  I could get it but not the high speed tube exhaust, or vice versus.  What will the t3/.48 setup boost up too efficiently?

Thanks, Jim

Not sure of the map for the t3 . 48, so I really couldn't tell you its efficiant boost level. As for the cam his performance cam is still based on one that will work in a stock motor, as such the lift is quite limited b4 valve to piston interfearnce happens, with some extra machining you could get a fair bit more lift, which would really help on the high end of the rpm range, for making hp. Yes you should be able to get the block oringed local to match your head. I think I would get the manifold b4 the turbo, as you can always add a ball bearing center section to it, or change out the turbo for a new one  at a later point.

I think that covers it.

andy2 said its around 20-22 psi.  anything above that, and the exhaust backpressure goes higher.  he has some cool pressure gauges!!!

I thought the stock t3 could boost that high. Will the t3-.48 mod raise it higher?
Do you mean machine the cutouts in the piston face deeper?

Thanks, jim
