Should I buy a new oil pump?
« on: March 29, 2007, 08:54:00 pm »
Well...Right now I'm finally in the process of rebuilding my 1984 Jetta diesel motor .  I've noticed some odd things about it too.  First of all, reading the odometer, it says 42,000 miles.  When taking it apart I noticed by the looks of it, someone  bought a brand new clutch not to long ago.  now I don't need to buy one.

That isn't the only thing that I have noticed.  As I was disconnecting the rods and crank, all of the bearings appeared to be BRAND NEW without a scratch!  I looked at the date on them, it said 8/83, so they must be the origionals.  Now I'm starting to think that the odometer is correct.  But the body does not show 42,000 miles and externally the motor was dirty.  That is what confuses me.

I still think that I'm going to buy new bearings and rings, but what about the oil pump.  It looks to be in good condition.  Do you think I should replace it with a new one?  Let me know what you think.  thanks
i'm dubbin it

cheap insurance IMO... do NOT buy a cheap one if you are replacing it though!
