another use for water coolant hoses?
« on: March 24, 2007, 03:21:10 pm »
can i use water coolant hoses to 'mate' my intercooler pipes. i have installed an intercooler from a mk3 tdi into my mk3 td using most of the original pipe work bt i am using the same inlet manifold and wondered if i can use water coolant hoses to join the intercooler up. the hoses will be used to attach a pipe from the turbo and a pipe to the inlet manifold.

any ideas?

i always thought they should never be strong enough, but i know some guys who use them, (i dont know how long they last)

samco is not the only aftermarket, Gates etc can supply you good turbo and coolant hoses also for a better price.

i used a lower rad hose off of a chevy diesel (6.2l) and it held 25 psi all day long. Also I might add that a typical cooling system will se 15 psi.

I used rad hoses on my first IC setup I went into the local NAPA with some measurments and they gave me 2 books full of random rad hoses(all shapes sizes bends etc...) to look at.15 mins later I had found all the hoses that I needed to make my piping. My rad hose/exhaust pipe/hose clamp setup wasn't exactly cheap but was a fraction of the cost of the proper stuff and only blew apart once a month I fineally put a bead of weld on the pipes to keep the hoses together at 25+psi boost.Since then I've swaped cars and have a proper FMIC with nice and pricy Piping .

i guess if you get some nice big coolant hoses you'd be all set :)

coolant hoses are also not too bad of an idea because rubber is a decent insulator :)

The rad hose that I used was from 2"-2 1/4" inside Dia.
